Safety Investigation Report of an accident to experimental ultralight aircraft Aeroprakt-22L2, LY-UCB, that occurred on 9 August 2024 in Balskai pond, Vaidilai village, Tauragė district, Lithuania, has been published
On 9 August 2024 at 20.19 hrs an experimental ultralight aircraft Aeroprakt-22L2, LY-UCB, piloted by a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania, took off from private airstrip near the village of Norkaičiai in Tauragė district for a private flight. A female passenger was on board together with the pilot. During one of the low passes over the pond, the aircraft impacted with the water and sank. The pilot drowned and the passenger was rescued by witnesses on shore.
The probable cause of the accident is the loss of control of the flight path of the aircraft during low-altitude manoeuvres which were not necessary for normal flight. The pilot either misjudged the aircraft's height above the water surface or was not concentrating on controlling the aircraft when flying at low altitude.
